Steven L. Klein has designed with light since 1978. He has been principal designer of Klein Lighting, LLC since 1998.

His knowledge of the human physiological relationship with light, technical virtuousity and creative talents in the manipulation of the most ethereal element of architectural design have set him apart in an industry of craftsmanship and artistry. His work transcends mere illumination, making light an architectural material capable of manipulating perception and redefining space.

Steven's unorthodox, human-centric approach tests the confines of the intellectual, physiological, emotional and spiritual elements of lighting design. He designs lighting solutions for projects found nationwide from his Milwaukee studio.

Steven's work has been published in dozens of trade periodicals and books. He teaches and lectures nationally on Lighting Design related topics and has been a speaker at the LightFair International Conference, NeoCon convention, various trade shows and universities, and is featured in the ASID Distinguished Speaker Series.

Steven L. Klein is a member of the following Professional Lighting Organizations:

International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD)

Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA)

Sally Klein, Steve Klein’s daughter, joined Klein Lighting as a designer and consultant in 2020. She has led projects including but not limited to the Gibson Social Club in Oshkosh, WI, the new Event Space and Motorcycle Museum at Throttlestop, in Elkhart Lake, WI and several residential lighting projects throughout Wisconsin and Los Angeles, California.

Sally brings a new and unique perspective to Klein Lighting through her academic lens of Art and Chemistry. Sally graduated from Beloit College in 2016 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Geology and a minor in German.

During college, she studied abroad at the Universität Salzburg in Austria. All of her Chemistry and Geology courses were taught and evaluated in German. She was a diligent art student, winning several awards for her emotive portrait paintings, which led to a teacher’s assistantship of two Art courses. Sally’s senior thesis in Geology focused on alkali metasomatism in samples from the White Mountains, CA. She is a published co-author for her work on this subject.

After graduating, she traveled throughout Southeast Asia and lived in Taiwan until 2019. In Taiwan, Sally worked at a magazine as a writer and editor. She also worked at the National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) and helped construct Taiwan’s first argon-argon dating lab, in addition to aiding in the writing and translating of international Masters and PhD candidates’ dissertations from Vietnamese and Mandarin to English.

In 2019, she moved to Bellingham, WA where she continued to work as a freelance writer while also working as a Chemist testing jet fuel and other petroleum products.

Sally grew up with two designer parents, and thus learned the business from a young age. Her parents made sure that she understood spatial awareness and lighting and design concepts.

In 2020, she returned to Milwaukee to become the 5th generation lighting. Steve and Sally are descendants of Bernard Blitzer, the founder of Lightolier.
